This project consists of the renovation, extension and partial conversion of a 19th century 3-story townhouse in Bedford-Styuvesant. The building itself belongs to the typology of Brownstone houses built in New York during the turn of the 19th century, named after the brown sandstone which was used as a cladding and facade material.
The building is characterised by the classic features of a Brownstone house: The street-facing stoop and a raised parlour floor, crownings cornices on both facades and a south-facing pocket garden. Many original interior details such as ceiling cornices, timber panel doors and parquet floors were well preserved, lending an authentic charm to the space as a whole. Structurally however, the building was in need of renovation. Architecturally, the theme of our work was to preserve the character and details of the building while improving the spatial connections through a series of careful interventions. The ‘mud room’, a small volume mainly used as utility/storage room in connection to the garden, was rebuilt as a bedroom with an additional roof terrace overlooking the garden. A new staircase was added to permit direct access from the parlour floor to the outdoor space. In addition to the interior works, Dahlberg Busnardo designed a new garden with a curated selection of plants and flowers local to the region.
